An hour later, I’d resorted to becoming a detective stereotype. Usually, I could keep a case in my head, or I’d jot things out in a notebook if I absolutely needed to. But these cases were too complex and they had degrees of varying ties that I needed to consider visually.

So, I pulled an old cork board that I had out of my storage area and began pinning names and cases to it and then added threads.

Yes, threads, like in the movies. If I was going to live the stereotype life, I’d do it to my best ability, dang it.

Once I’d finished arranging everything, I stared at the board, hoping that this new method of organization would simply suddenly allow me to have a breakthrough.

Starting with Ren, my first case. The case that had stumped me and my magic. I shuddered as I recalled how strong the magic inside Ren had been. It was that challenge more than anything that had made me obsessed with the case. A case that had snowballed into many other ones over the past few weeks.

I looked at his photo that I’d managed to print off from the database. He was an okay looking guy, but now that I knew about his past, the picture had taken on a new light. I could tell that Ren had experienced trouble in his life. He looked just a little older than his years.

But he was still able to smile. Marcus had said he’s been a good friend and good guy too.

And apparently, he’d been appealing enough to Lily for her to date him.

My eyes darted to Lily, and I had to admit that, if I’d been given their pictures, I’d never put the two together. Maybe that was judgmental of me, in fact, it probably was, but she was so . . . fresh. So high-class and full of life.

Then again, I only saw Ren when he was dead . . . Maybe he was full of life too?

I’d never know.

But even if he was, and I was just being a Judgy McJudgerson, there was still the matter that Ren was a wolf and Lily was a witch. How had they even met? Ren wasn’t part of the leadership delegation that Marcus had been a part of, I was sure of that. Had Ren met her when the alpha took him to the High Priestess’s on one of his little affair visits? Had that ever happened? And after they had met, what had enticed Lily to start up a relationship with Ren and risk it all? Had he wooed her because he wanted to spy on Lily?

I thought of the spyware in his closet, and the fact that someone at the station had led Seth to believe that Ren was an informant when the shadow force agents insisted that he was not. Had someone planted the information just to throw me off?

I shook my head, completely unsure, and then moved on.

My fingers traced the string from Lily to a photo of the late High Priestess.
